PROMISE Scholarship

West Virginia homeschoolers are eligible to apply for the PROMISE scholarship www.promisescholarships.org. The acronym stands for Providing Real Opportunities for Maximizing In-state Student Excellence. The program was created in 2002 to encourage students to attend college in-state. The scholarship provides full tuition at any state school, and in-state private schools provide matching dollars.

Requirements include a 3.0 grade point average, and an ACT score of 21 with at least 19 in all subject areas or combined SAT score of 1000 with a minimum 470 verbal and 460 math.

Homeschooled students must meet the same test score requirements and pass the GED test. They do not have to provide evidence of a grade point average.

Deadlines: Application deadline is January 31. Homeschoolers are encouraged to apply by that date if possible, but the cutoff date is not an absolute, and testing does not have to be completed to apply. Homeschooled applicants must have the GED completed by May to be considered for a Fall award. Typically, students must complete the ACT by December of their senior year and the SAT by January of their senior year, but this year (2004) the deadline has been extended. Because the requirements for 2003-04 seniors have increased, ACT and SAT scores will be accepted through June 2004 .

To apply for the PROMISE scholarship, you must complete the Common Application for State Level Financial Aid Programs. You can request a copy of the application by calling 1-877-PROMISE (recommended method), or print off and mail the application by clicking this link: http://www.wvapply.com/commonapp2004.pdf (not recommended unless you have a broadband connection).

All applicants must also file a FAFSA application, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The deadline for West Virginians to file a FAFSA application is March 1.
