Hundreds of homeschoolers from across West Virginia attended the 25th Annual Homeschool Day at the Capitol on February 12th. Families visited with legislators, participated in tours of the Capitol and the WV Supreme Court of Appeals. To help us celebrate our 25th year sponsoring this event WVHEA member Kathie Crouse was able to secure donations that included beverages from Sheetz and cookies from Chick-fil-A to compliment the cake WVHEA provided.
All the efforts homeschoolers across the state made on HSD and throughout the year paid off on April 2nd when Governor Tomblin signed SB 447 into law. Senator Robert Barnes, a homeschooling dad, drafted and was the lead sponsor of this bill which goes into effect on June 12th and requires state agencies and institutions of higher learning to recognize high school diplomas issued by homeschool administrators.
HDC is an important annual event we hope will continue to grow. We need to continue educating policy makers and politicians in order to secure other important rights for homeschoolers in our state. This historic legislation is a great victory WVHEA members helped make possible.
